This story teaches us that true worth comes from wisdom, not appearance.
Story
Once upon a time, in a kingdom lived a wise sage named Ashtavakra. He was known for his deep understanding of life and the universe. However, he looked quite different; he had eight bends in his body. Many people made fun of him, but his wisdom was as straight as an arrow. In the same kingdom of Mithila lived King Janaka, a ruler known for his wisdom and generosity.
One day, he decided to hold a grand assembly. Scholars from all around came to discuss various philosophies and teachings. Amidst this gathering, King Janaka was led to believe he was the wisest of all. Suddenly, Ashtavakra arrived at the court. Upon seeing his unusual appearance, many in the court laughed and whispered. Yet, Ashtavakra, calm and composed, spoke up gently: “What is worth more, the outward appearance or the inner wisdom?” Hearing this, the king and others were taken aback.
King Janaka invited Ashtavakra to discuss the essence of life. The sage shared a profound truth: “Our thoughts and actions define us. A wise person knows that the self is beyond the physical form.” This wisdom resonated with King Janaka deeply.
Janaka then asked the most important question of his life: “How is Knowledge to be achieved? How is detachment acquired? How is liberation attained?” As the conversation progressed, Ashtavakra elaborated on his teachings, which would later form the Ashtavakra Gita.
Ashtavakra didn’t talk about rituals, duties, or rules. He spoke about Awareness.
He told Janaka:
• You are not the body
• You are not the mind
• You are not your thoughts
• You are the Witness — the one who sees everything

He said freedom comes when you understand: "I am not the doer. I am pure Awareness.”
This became a pivotal moment for Janaka, igniting the thirst for Truth in his heart. Curious and eager to learn more, he asked Ashtavakra to become his mentor. They spent many days discussing profound topics, and gradually, Janaka transformed into a wise king, understanding the deeper meanings of life.
Ashtavakra's teachings empowered Janaka to rule with compassion and insight. He wanted everyone to understand that true happiness comes from inner peace and wisdom, rather than external validation.
