गुरुर्ब्रह्मा गुरुर्विष्णुः गुरुर्देवो महेश्वरः

गुरु: साक्षात् परब्रह्म तस्मै श्री गुरवे नमः॥

Gururbrahma Guruvishnu Gururdevo Maheshwaraha

Guruh Sakshat Parabrahma Tasmai Shri Gurave Namaha

This mantra is from ancient Sanskrit scriptures that praise the teacher (Guru) as the highest form of divine energy (Gods). The mantra is usually recited at the beginning of an event, like cultural programs, study meets, and even during special prayers or spiritual gatherings to honour teachers and seek their blessings. It sets a positive and respectful tone for the event, reminding everyone of the importance of learning and guidance.

By reciting this mantra, we express gratitude to our parents and teachers who help us grow through their right guidance. We respect them equally to God for the love, care and selfless support offered by him.

Word-by-word meaning of the Mantra

  • Guru: Teacher or guide

  • Brahma: The creator

  • Vishnu: The preserver

  • Maheshwaraha: Bhagwan Shiva, the destroyer

  • Sakshat: Self/Himself.

  • Parabrahma: The Supreme Divine/The Ultimate

  • Tasmai: To that

  • Shri Gurave: Respected teacher

  • Namah: I Bow

The Guru is Brahma (the creator), Vishnu (the preserver), and Maheshwara (Shiva, the destroyer). The Guru is the Supreme Divine itself. I bow to the Guru with respect.

Let us understand the importance of this Mantra through this story.

Once, there was a little boy named Rohan who loved to ask questions. One day, he went to his Guru and asked, "Guruji, why are teachers so special?" To this, the Guru replied, "A Guru helps his student learn and become wise. He makes him realise his/her true potential and infinite strength.

"But how does he do it?" Rohan asked

The Guru smiled and said, "Let me show you." He handed Rohan a seed and asked, "What do you see?"

Rohan replied, "A tiny seed."

The Guru explained, "Inside this seed is a big tree. I will guide you to plant it, water it, and take care of it. Over time, it will grow into a huge tree, giving shade and fruits to everyone. Similarly, a Guru helps the tiny seed of wisdom in your heart grow into a big tree of knowledge by his guidance and care."

Rohan was amazed. He planted the seed and took care of it every day, just as he learned from his Guru. Over time, the tree grew, and so did Rohan, by getting wisdom and skills from his Guru. Rohan realised how valuable his Guru's teachings were, and with the right guidance and support, every small thing can turn into something potentially great.

From that day, Rohan chanted the Guru mantra every morning to thank his Guru for showing him the way.

He learned the importance of a guide, a Guru, and a mentor who lights the path of knowledge and helps overcome the darkness of ignorance.

Moral of the Story

A Guru is like a gardener who nurtures the seeds of wisdom in us. By respecting and learning from them, we grow into strong, kind, and wise individuals.

Tip for Kids:

Try chanting this mantra every day before starting your studies to feel focused and thankful!

Conclusion

The Guru Brahma Guru Vishnu mantra beautifully shows us that God takes the form of a teacher to guide us through life. Just as Brahma Ji creates, Bhagwan Vishnu sustains, and Bhagwan Shiva transforms, a Guru helps us learn, grow, and overcome challenges. It reminds us that every lesson we learn, whether from a person, experience, or nature, is a gift from the Teacher, who is always guiding us towards wisdom and goodness.
