Kaal Bhairav Story in English

This story teaches us about humility and the importance of protecting.

Kaal Bhairav is a special form of God Shiva who represents both destruction and protection. His eyes shine like fire, his body glows with energy, and a black dog always walks beside him. He is the keeper of time, the destroyer of fear, and the protector of truth. The story of how he came to be is quite fascinating!

Story

Long ago, the three great gods: Brahma ji, the Creator, Vishnu ji, the Protector, and Shiv ji, the Destroyer, met on Mount Kailash. Brahma ji thought he was the greatest among all gods and started saying, “I am the creator! No one is above me!” Shiv ji smiled quietly. He knew that pride was not a good thing. But Brahma ji didn’t stop. Shiv ji then decided to teach him a gentle but powerful lesson. Shiv ji said softly, “Brahma, every being has a role to play: creation, protection, and destruction are all parts of one truth. Pride makes you forget that.”

But Brahmaji didn’t listen. He kept speaking proudly and even insulted Shiva.

At that moment, Shiva’s eyes shone like fire. From the tip of one of his fingernails, he chipped off a spark of his divine energy and from that spark, a fierce form appeared — Kaal Bhairav!

As Kaal Bhairav emerged, he announced, “Oh Brahma! You must learn to be humble! Your arrogance threatens the balance of the universe.” But Brahma, full of pride, laughed and said, “Who are you to challenge me? I am the creator!”

This made Kaal Bhairav even angrier. Kaal Bhairav cut off Brahma’s fifth head, the one that had spoken words of arrogance. Brahma ji immediately realized his mistake. His pride melted away, and he bowed before Shiva, saying, “Forgive me. I have learned my lesson. ”Even though Shiv ji could have destroyed Brahma, he chose to spare him instead.

Kaal Bhairav said, “I forgive you, but remember, with great power comes great responsibility. Be humble and respect everyone.”

But since Kaal Bhairav had removed a head of Brahma, it was considered a sin. Brahma ji's head got stuck to Kaal Bhairav's hand. He roamed from one holy place to another, but the skull wouldn’t leave his hand. Finally, he reached the sacred city of Kashi (Varanasi). The moment he entered Kashi, the skull fell from his hand: his sin was gone! Shiv ji appeared and said, “O Bhairav, you shall stay here forever as the Kotwal (guardian) of Kashi. You will protect this holy city and bless everyone who comes here.”

And so, Kaal Bhairav became the protector of Kashi, the fearless guardian who keeps watch over Bhagwan Shiva’s city.

So children, whenever you find yourself feeling too proud or think you are better than others, remember Kaal Bhairav's story. Just like Bhagwan Kaal Bhairav, embracing humility makes you stronger and wiser. Protecting others is the way to show true strength!
