Kevat and Bhagwan Rama: A Short Tale of Devotion and Humility

The story of Kevat and Lord Rama is one of the most touching episodes from the Ramcharitmanas, beautifully illustrating humility, devotion, and equality.

Kewat ne kaha Raghurai se,

Utarai na loonga hey Bhagwan

Main nadi-naal ka sevak hoon,

Tum bhav sagar ke swami ho,

Main yahan-wahan paar lagata hoon,

Aap to sabko paar lagate ho…

These lines beautifully express Kevat’s philosophy—he sees himself as a simple ferryman of rivers, while Bhagwan Rama is the one who helps souls cross the vast ocean of existence.

myNachiketa presents: Kevat and Bhagwan Rama: A Short Tale of Devotion and Humility

During their exile of 14 years, Bhagwan Rama, along with Devi Sita and Lakshmana, reached the banks of the sacred Ganga River. They needed to cross the river, and a humble boatman named Kevat was called.

However, Kevat refused to let Rama step into his boat immediately. With folded hands, he said that he had heard how the dust of Rama’s feet had turned a stone (Ahalya) into a living being. He feared that if the same divine touch transformed his wooden boat, he would lose his only means of livelihood.

Instead, Kevat requested permission to wash Shri Rama’s feet before allowing Him to board. Rama agreed, and Kevat lovingly washed His feet with great devotion. Only then did he ferry them across the river.

This simple act carried profound symbolism:

  • Pure Devotion (Bhakti): Kevat saw Rama not as a prince, but as the Divine.

  • Service as Worship: Washing Shri Rama’s feet became an act of sacred service.

When Ramaji later offered him a reward, Kevat humbly refused. He said that since both of them were “boatmen” (Bhagwan Rama ferries souls across the ocean of life, and Kevat ferries people across the river), there was no need for payment between equals.

This short yet powerful story continues to inspire millions, showing that even the simplest acts can become sacred when filled with faith.
