Satyam Vada Dharma Chara: Speak the Truth, Follow Righteousness

In ancient India, wise teachers taught children not only how to read and write, but also how to live a good and honest life. One of the most beautiful teachings they gave is the line “Satyam Vada, Dharmam Chara.” These simple words carry a big message: always speak the truth and always do what is right. This teaching originates from the Upanishads and remains relevant for children today.

myNachiketa presents Satyam Vada Dharmam Chara: Speak the Truth, Follow Righteousness.

Arjun was a cheerful and curious boy who loved to play and explore. One day, while he was playing near a river, he found a shiny golden coin! Wow, what a treasure! But as he picked it up, he remembered his father’s words: "Arjun, always speak the truth and follow the path of righteousness. It will guide you well through life."

Arjun was excited but also confused. Should he keep the coin for himself? It was such a beautiful find! But he remembered that there might be someone who lost it and was looking for it. After thinking hard, Arjun decided to take it back to the village.

As Arjun reached the village, he saw an old woman crying. She looked sad and worried. Arjun approached her and asked, "Aunty, what’s wrong?" The old woman replied, "Oh, my dear boy! I lost my precious coin, and now I can’t buy food for my family."

With a smile, Arjun reached into his pocket and handed the coin to her. Her eyes widened in surprise. "Thank you, dear boy! You have returned my treasure!" she exclaimed, and hugged him tightly. Arjun felt a warm glow inside. He had spoken the truth and followed the path of rightness by returning the coin.

The Complete Shloka

Satyam vada, dharmam chara.Svadhyayan ma pramadah.

Acharyaya priyam dhanam ahritya prajatan tum ma vyavachchetsih.

Satyann pramaditavyam, dharmann pramaditavyam.

This teaching comes from the Taittiriya Upanishad, Shiksha Valli (Section 1, Anuvaka 11). It is part of a farewell message given by a teacher to students upon the completion of their education.

The shloka teaches many things, but the main message is:

“Speak the truth. Follow righteousness. Never stop learning. Respect your teacher. Take care of your family and society. Never move away from truth and goodness.”

Why Is This Teaching Important?

Truth and dharma are like two strong legs that help us walk on the right path. When we speak the truth, people trust us. When we follow dharma, we make good choices that do not hurt others. This teaching helps children grow into kind, brave, and responsible human beings. It shows that success is not just about winning or getting more, but about being good from the inside.

So, dear children, how can you apply this lesson in your daily life? Here are some ideas:

  • Always speak the truth: Just like Arjun, when you find something that doesn’t belong to you, think about how the other person might feel.

  • Help others: If you see someone in trouble or sadness, try to help them. It could be as simple as sharing your toy or being a good friend.

  • Be brave: Sometimes, telling the truth might be hard, but facing it will make you strong and trustworthy.

Remember, even the smallest act of kindness can make a big difference! Just like Arjun, always speak the truth and follow righteousness in everything you do.
