myNachiketa presents Why We Celebrate Ganesh Chaturthi?

Ganesh Chaturthi is not just a day, but an entire festival filled with love, devotion, and togetherness. It is celebrated with great enthusiasm, especially in Maharashtra, where communities come together to share in the festivities. But why do we celebrate it? Let’s read and learn about this!

The Birth of Ganesha

Ganesha was created by Goddess Parvati, who wanted a loving son to accompany her. When she shaped him from clay and breathed life into him, she didn’t know how much joy he would bring to the world! This festival marks the return of Ganesha to Earth, filling our lives with blessings and happiness.

The Teachings of Ganesha

Ganesha is much more than just a loving God; he teaches us important lessons:

  • Removing Obstacles: Ganesh ji is called Vighnaharta, which means “the remover of obstacles.” Just like a friend who clears the toys off the floor so you don’t trip while running, Ganesha helps us clear the problems or difficulties in our lives.

  • Wisdom and Learning: Ganesh ji is also known as Buddhi Pradaayaka—the giver of wisdom and intelligence. That’s why, before starting anything new—whether it’s a school project, a music class, or even the first day of a new job—people pray to Bhagwan Ganesha. They believe His blessings help them think clearly, make good decisions, and understand things better.

Why Is Ganesh Chaturthi a 10-Day Festival?

  1. Honouring Ganesha’s Birth – Celebrates Bhagwan Ganesha’s birthday from Chaturthi (4th day) to Ananta Chaturdashi (14th day). This span of ten days gives time for people to celebrate, pray, and enjoy with the God before his idol is immersed in water.

  2. Blessings and Letting Go – When we bring Ganesha home, he blesses us for ten days. On the last day, we immerse his idol, showing that everything has a beginning and an end, and we must say goodbye with love.

  3. Rituals & Togetherness – Ten days allow for special prayers, music, dance, sweets, and community bonding.

After ten days filled with cheer, love, and devotion, it’s time for Ganesh Visarjan, where the idols are immersed in water. This beautiful tradition represents the cycle of life and reminds us of the importance of enjoying each moment before it transforms into memories.

Ganesh Chaturthi is a time to welcome Ganesha/ Ganapati ji with love, seek his blessings for wisdom and success, and celebrate togetherness. As we bid him farewell, we remember that his blessings stay with us always.
