Artha for Kids: The Secret of Using Money Wisely Pic 1

Dear children, have you ever wondered what money really is? You may have seen your parents use it to buy food, toys, or even a ticket to a fun place. But money isn’t just about shiny coins and colourful notes! It carries a very special meaning in our lives. Let’s dive into the world of money, explore its secrets, and learn the wonderful ways we can use it wisely!

myNachiketa presents Artha for Kids: The Secret of Using Money Wisely.

What is Artha?

Artha is a Sanskrit word that means money and wealth, and is one of the four purusharthas of Hindu Philosophy. It is more than just coins and notes. Artha means wealth, resources, or even money. Artha is also the things we need in life, like food, clothes, books, toys, and even the skills and knowledge that help us live well. So, artha is anything that helps us lead a comfortable and happy life.

But it’s not only about having lots of things. It’s about understanding how to earn and spend wisely! Imagine you have a jar of sweets. You can eat them all at once, or you can share some with your friends and save some for later! That’s managing your resources wisely!

Learning from the Arthashastra

Have you ever heard of a wise man named Kautilya, also known as Chanakya? He wrote a book called Arthashastra, where he taught smart ways to manage money and resources!  It teaches us how to earn money honestly, save it carefully, spend it wisely, and use it to help others. The Arthashastra is not just for kings or adults; it has lessons that even children can understand, like the importance of honesty, effort, and helping others.

Vedic Teachings on Wealth

The Vedas, our ancient scriptures, also teach us about the importance of Artha. They remind us that wealth is a tool, much like a pencil. You can use a pencil to draw beautiful pictures or scribble messy notes. It’s how you use it that counts!

But Artha must always follow Dharma, the path of honesty and righteousness. Money and wealth are seen as tools to fulfill needs and support family and society, not something to be chased endlessly. The wise say we should not get too attached to wealth, because the highest goal of life is Moksha, freedom, and peace for the soul.

Shloka from Chanakya Niti:

विदेशेषु धनं विद्या व्यसनेषु धनं मतिः ।

परलोके धनं धर्मः शीलं तु निखिलं धनम् ॥

Videsheshu dhanam vidya vyasaneshu dhanam matih

Paraloke dhanam dharmah shilam tu nikhilam dhanam

Meaning: In foreign lands, knowledge (vidya) is the real wealth; in times of trouble, intelligence (mati) is the real wealth. In the next world, dharma (righteousness) is the real wealth, but above all, good character (shila) is the greatest wealth everywhere.

How to Use Money Wisely

Here are a few fun ways you can start using your money wisely every day:

  1. Save First: If you save a little bit every time you get money, you will have a big tree of wealth later!

  2. Spend Thoughtfully: Before buying a toy, ask yourself: Do I really need it?

  3. Share: Don’t forget to share with those who need. Helping others brings happiness, and that’s worth more than anything!

  4. Learn and Grow: Read books and learn about how money works. The more you know, the better you can manage your own.

What is more valuable than Money?

Now, children, it’s essential to remember that while money is important, there are priceless things in life like love, friendship, and happiness! Money can buy toys, but it can’t buy true joy or a loving family! Happiness comes from how we use it and the values we follow. That’s why it is important to use money wisely.

The Bhagavad Gita also teaches us about real happiness. Shri Krishna says that true happiness is like something that feels hard at first but becomes sweet later, like studying before exams. Quick pleasures, like spending money on toys or candies, are fun for a moment, but lasting happiness comes from wisdom, kindness, and self-control.

So, kids, remember this: money is important, but love, knowledge, honesty, health, and kindness are even more valuable. Use money wisely, help others, and always choose what makes you truly happy. That is the real treasure in life.
