Bhagavad Gita Chapter 2: Summary for Children

The Bhagavad Gita Chapter 2 is called Sankhya Yoga (The Yoga of Knowledge). In this chapter, Shri Krishna begins to teach Arjuna important lessons about life, duty, the soul, and how to stay calm in difficult situations.


Arjuna is feeling sad and confused about fighting in the Kurukshetra War. He does not want to fight his relatives and teachers. न जायते म्रियते वा कदाचित् नायं भूत्वा भविता वा न भूयः।

अजो नित्यः शाश्वतोऽयं पुराणो न हन्यते हन्यमाने शरीरे॥

Na jayate mriyate va kadachin Nayam bhutva bhavita va na bhuyah

Ajo nityah sasvato ayam puranoNa hanyate hanyamane sarire

Meaning

The soul is never born and never dies. It is eternal, everlasting, and cannot be destroyed even when the body dies.

    वासांसि जीर्णानि यथा विहाय नवानि गृह्णाति नरोऽपराणि।

    तथा शरीराणि विहाय जीर्णानि अन्यानि संयाति नवानि देही॥

    Vasamsi jirnani yatha vihaya Navani grhnati naro aparani

    Tatha sarirani vihaya jirnaniAnyani samyati navani dehi


    Meaning

    Just like a person throws away old clothes and wears new ones, the soul leaves an old body and takes a new one.

    3. Do Your Duty


    कर्मण्येवाधिकारस्ते मा फलेषु कदाचन।

    मा कर्मफलहेतुर्भूः मा ते सङ्गोऽस्त्वकर्मणि॥

    Karmanye vadhikarasteMa phalesu kadachana

    Ma karma phala hetur bhurMa te sango astu akarmani


    Meaning

    You have the right to perform your duty, but not to worry about the results. Do not work only for rewards, and do not stop doing your duty.

    योगस्थः कुरु कर्माणि सङ्गं त्यक्त्वा धनञ्जय।

    Yogasthah kuru karmaniSangam tyaktva dhananjaya

    Siddhy asiddhyoh samo bhutvaSamatvam yoga ucyate

    Meaning

    Meaning

    A person who controls their senses and mind becomes peaceful and happy.
