Dharma for kids

Do what is right, not what is easy

Dharma can be simply defined as “doing the right thing”. It’s about making choices that are good for ourselves and others, based on our responsibilities and values. Just like in a game when you are following the rules, dharma keeps our lives balanced and harmonious.

In the beautiful story of the Bhagavad Gita, we learn dharma through the conversation between Krishna and Arjuna. Imagine yourself in Arjuna’s place. He was a great warrior who faced a tough battle not only against enemies but also within himself. He didn’t want to fight against his own family and teachers. Feeling confused and worried, he turned to Krishna for guidance.

Here’s a special verse from the Bhagavad Gita that Krishna shared with Arjuna:

This means, “You have the right to perform your prescribed duties, but you are not entitled to the fruits of your actions.” Krishna taught Arjuna that he should focus on doing his duty as a warrior without worrying about the outcome. It was his dharma to fight and protect the righteous.

This story inspires us to remember our responsibilities, too! Following our dharma helps us choose what is right and makes our hearts light.

For example, if you see someone struggling to lift their bag, offering to help them is following your dharma. In everyday life, this could be as simple as being honest with a friend or sharing your toys with others.

Why is it so important to follow our Dharma?

When we do what is right, we create a better environment for everyone around us. It makes us feel proud, and we build trust and friendship. These qualities are what make us a hero in our lives!

Real-Life Examples of Dharma

  • Being Honest: If you find a toy that doesn't belong to you, it’s your dharma to return it to its rightful owner.

  • Helping Others: Offer your help to a classmate who is having a hard time understanding a subject.

  • Respecting Your Family: Listening to your parents and showing them appreciation is a way to honour your family’s values.

In our quest to find our inner hero, we learn that every little action counts. Each time you act with kindness and choose to do the right thing, you are making the world a better place.

Let’s remember to reflect on our choices and think about how we can bring out the hero within us by following our dharma. Every action we take is an opportunity to make someone’s day brighter!

So, kids, channel your inner hero! Choose dharma and live a life filled with purpose and joy.
