An interesting episode happens during Sitaji’s swayamvar in King Janak’s palace. A big and powerful bow of Bhagwan Shiv was kept there, and whoever could lift and string it would marry Sitaji. When Sri Ram tried to lift the bow, it broke into two pieces! Everyone was surprised.

Just then, Parshuram, a powerful sage who loved Bhagwan Shiv very much, arrived. He was very angry to see the bow broken. He wanted to know who had done it. Ram stayed calm, but Lakshman spoke boldly. Then began an intense and interesting conversation between Lakshman and Parshuram.

Parshuram (furious, looking at Ram): “Who dares to break the great bow of Bhagwan Shiv? Do you even understand its power? This is no ordinary bow!”

Lakshman (smiling, slightly teasing): “Please listen. In our childhood, we broke many bows. We thought this was just another old bow. Why are you so attached to it?”

Parshuram (angered further): “You foolish boy! Watch your words. Do you think this bow is like any ordinary weapon? This is Bhagwan Shiv’s bow, famous across the world!”

Lakshman (calm but bold): “To us, all bows look the same. And this one was so old that it broke as soon as my brother, Shri Ram, touched it. How is that his fault? Why are you getting angry without reason?”

Parshuram (threatening): “You arrogant child! Do not think I spare you because you are young. Do you even know who I am? I am Parshuram—the destroyer of the warrior class! My anger is known across the world!”

Parshuram (angrily): “Hey, boy! Do you see my sharp axe? I am very powerful! I have defeated many kings. Even brave warriors get scared when they see me. Don’t make me angry, or you will be in big trouble!”

Lakshman (smiling playfully): “Oh really? You think you are very great, don’t you? You keep showing your axe again and again, as if you are trying to shake a mountain with just a little puff of air!"

"But I am not someone who gets scared so easily. I spoke only because you came here so angry. In our family, we respect sages and elders. So even if you are upset, I will still speak politely.”

Lakshman (giggling a little): “And why are you carrying such heavy weapons? Your loud voice is already enough to scare everyone! You don’t even need that axe when you are this angry!”

Parshuram (very angry): “Listen, everyone! This boy is very naughty! He is asking for trouble. Don’t blame me if I punish him! Someone tell him who I am so that he learns to stay quiet!”

Lakshman (with a cheeky smile): “Oh, Sage, why ask others? You have already told us about your greatness so many times! No one can praise you better than you!”

Lakshman Teases the Sage

Lakshman smiled and said, “Please calm down. Anger is not good. It makes people do wrong things. Are you really so upset about a broken bow? If you love it so much, maybe we can get it fixed! Why be so angry?”

King Janak (worried): “Lakshman, please be quiet. It is not right to speak like this to a great sage.”

Parshuram Gets Furious

Parshuram lifted his axe and shouted: “This boy has crossed all limits! I tried to forgive him because he is young, but now I cannot tolerate this anymore!”

Lakshman Stays Fearless

Lakshman replied bravely: “You say you are a great warrior. But true heroes do not speak harshly. They show their strength through actions, not words. Only someone unsure of himself keeps boasting.”

Sri Ram Steps In

Sri Ram slowly came forward and spoke very gently: “Please forgive him. He is young and does not understand fully. You are wise and kind. Please do not be angry because of his words.”

Parshuram then gave Sri Ram his own bow and asked him to show his strength. Sri Ram easily lifted and strung it.

Seeing this, Parshuram understood that Sri Ram was not an ordinary person; he was Bhagwan Vishnu, Himself. At once, his anger disappeared. He folded his hands, apologised, and praised Sri Ram. Then he left peacefully, and everyone felt calm and happy again.
