Have you ever looked at the stars in the sky and felt that there's something much bigger than us? Or when you spend time with friends and family, do you sometimes feel a sense of connection like everything is just right? This feeling of completeness is what we explore in the beautiful Sanskrit mantra, Om Purnamadah Purnamidam. It captures the essence of our universe, teaching us that everything around us is connected and whole.
myNachiketa presents Om Purnamadah Purnamidam – The Secret of Wholeness.
What Does It Mean?
Purna means complete or whole. This mantra can be translated to mean: "That is Whole, This is Whole; from Wholeness emerges Wholeness." It beautifully tells us that if we see something as a whole (complete), it is whole (complete). Everything in this universe comes from completeness; even if you take away something from what is full, what remains is still complete!
Imagine a pizza that is cut into slices. Each slice is still part of the whole pizza. In the same way, we are all parts of the universe, yet we each are whole in ourselves!
A Lesson from the Upanishads
The mantra comes from the Isha Upanishad, an ancient Indian text that teaches us about the nature of reality. It tells us that the ultimate essence of everything is Brahman: the whole, the complete source of all. In the Isha Upanishad, it is said:
ॐ पूर्णमदः पूर्णमिदम् पूर्णात् पूर्णमुदच्यते।
पूर्णस्य पूर्णमादाय पूर्णमेवावशिष्यते।
Transliteration: Om Purnamadah Purnamidam,
Purnat Purnamudachyate Purnasya Purnamadaya, Purnamevavashishyate.

What Does It Teach Us?
Through this mantra, we learn that everything in our lives: our joy, our fears, our friends are all interconnected. You don’t need to be richer, smarter, prettier, or better to feel complete. Inside you already lives the same divine light that shines in everyone and everything. This thought can help us appreciate the importance of sharing and caring for each other, understanding that we are not alone.
How Can We Use It in Our Daily Lives?
Next time you feel upset or incomplete, try reciting this mantra. Close your eyes and take a deep breath, and say it softly. You could feel the warmth and wholeness surrounding you.
Be confident: When you remember that you are complete, you don’t need others’ approval to feel good about yourself.
Be kind: When you see others as complete (one whole), you respect them and treat them with love.
Be calm: You don’t chase too many things to “feel happy.” You enjoy what you have, and happiness flows naturally.
True joy doesn’t come from having more things; it comes from realizing that we are already complete. So next time you feel upset or left out, close your eyes and remember:
I am whole. I am complete. I am enough!

When we truly understand Om Purnamadah Purnamidam, we begin to see the world with new eyes. We stop chasing things to “complete” us and start enjoying what already is. We become calmer, kinder, and more joyful.
Just like the light of one lamp can light up many others without losing its glow, your inner light never runs out. You are already full of goodness, love, and peace; you just have to remember it every day.
