Have you heard the sound “Om” before? Maybe at home during prayers, in yoga class, or watching cartoons about gods? It’s not just any sound — it’s a powerful sound that’s been around for a very long time!
Today, let’s find out what Om means, where it comes from, and why it makes us feel peaceful and happy inside.
When we chant Om, we are connecting with the universe. It is often described as the sound of creation or the sound of the universe. It’s like the gentle hum that started everything — stars, planets, nature, and even us! Just imagine, everything around us, the trees, the sky, and even you and me, are all part of this big universal family. Wouldn't it be fun to sing along with all of creation?
myNachiketa presents Chanting Om: Aum Explained for Kids.
The Origin of Om
The sound Om comes from ancient Indian scriptures known as the Upanishads. The Chandogya Upanishad, in particular, teaches us that Om represents the essence of the universe. It is a sacred sound through which everything exists. It says that just like a tiny seed can grow into a big tree, Om is the tiny sound from which everything in the world began.
Through time, chanting Om has become a way for many to meditate and find peace. Imagine when you hear your favourite song on the radio, it makes you feel happy and light! Similarly, chanting Om can create joy and calmness in your heart!
What Does Om Mean?
When we break down the sound Om, we find that it consists of three sounds: A, U, and M.
Each part has its own special meaning:

A stands for our waking state (like when you’re playing or studying).
U represents our dreaming state (think about when you fall asleep and dream big).
M signifies the state of deep sleep (when you rest and recharge your energy, when your mind is in complete rest mode).
So, when we chant Om, we connect all three states of consciousness, our mind, body, and soul — all at once!
It brings together our thoughts, feelings, and peaceful energy.

Here’s a beautiful Sanskrit shloka from Mandukya Upanishad:
ॐ इत्येतदक्षरं इदं सर्वम्।
तस्योपव्याख्यानं भूतं भवद्भविष्यदिति सर्वम् ओङ्कार एव॥
Om ity etad aksharam idam sarvam
Tasya upavyakhyanam bhootam bhavat bhavishyat iti sarvam omkara eva
This means that Om – this syllable is everything. Everything that has happened in the past, everything happening now, and everything that will happen in the future — all of it is inside this one sound: Om!
