Have you ever found yourself standing at a crossroads, not sure which path to take? Making choices can sometimes feel difficult, like trying to solve a puzzle without all the pieces. Life is full of choices. Making the right choices helps us live happily and peacefully. In the Bhagavad Gita, Bhagwan Krishna gave Arjuna some timeless lessons. These lessons can guide us too, and help us choose wisely in every step of life.
myNachiketa presents Learn to Make Right Choices in Life from Krishna for children to understand dharma, practice selfless action, build faith, and live with wisdom and courage.
Understanding Our Choices
Making choices is a part of everyone’s life, especially for kids like you! Whether it’s deciding what game to play or choosing how to treat your friends, every choice counts. Shri Krishna, in the Bhagavad Gita, encourages us to reflect on our responsibilities, known as Dharma. This means we must choose the path that aligns with our duties.
Dharma
Dharma can be thought of as your duty or the right thing to do. Krishna says (Bhagavad Gita Shloka 3.35):
श्रेयान् स्वधर्मो विगुणः परधर्मात्स्वनुष्ठितात्।
स्वधर्मे निधनं श्रेयः परधर्मो भयावहः ॥ ३५ ॥
Shreyana svadharmo vigunah paradharmat svanushthitat
Svadharme nidhanam shreyah paradharmo bhayavahah
It is better to follow your own duty (dharma), even if you are not perfect at it, than to follow someone else’s duty very well. Doing your own work, even if hard, is safe and right, but taking up another’s work can bring fear and harm.
The Importance of Selflessness
Shri Krishna teaches us the idea of ‘Nishkama Karma, which means working without expecting rewards. Do your best because it is the right thing to do—not just because you want praise. By making choices that help others, we can find true joy.
Think about this:
When you help someone, you not only make them smile but also you feel good inside.
Helping your parents with chores contributes to a happy home.
Seeking Knowledge
Knowledge is like light—it helps us see the right way. Reading, asking questions, and listening to teachers and elders makes us wise. The more you know, the better choices you can make.
In the Bhagavad Gita, we learn:
Buy our books to explore more inspiring stories and lessons for children
(Bhagavad Gita Shloka 6.5)
उद्धरेदात्मनाऽत्मानं नात्मानमवसादयेत् ।
आत्मैव ह्यात्मनो बन्धुरात्मैव रिपुरात्मनः ॥ ५ ॥
Uddhared atmana atmanam natmanam avasadayet
Atmaiva hy atmano bandhura atmaiva ripur atmanah
A person should lift themselves up by their own mind and not let themselves fall. The mind can be your best friend or your worst enemy.
This means that your thoughts shape your life! Therefore, always seek knowledge and think about your choices before acting.

Maintaining a Calm Mind
Shri Krishna explains that a calm mind makes better choices. When we are angry, scared, or upset, we often make mistakes. By taking a deep breath, staying patient, and thinking clearly, we choose the right path.
Shri Krishna teaches: Bhagavad Gita (2.63)
क्रोधाद्भवति सम्मोहः सम्मोहात्स्मृतिविभ्रमः।
स्मृतिभ्रंशाद् बुद्धिनाशो बुद्धिनाशात्प्रणश्यति ॥
Krodhad bhavati sammohah sammohat smriti vibhramah
Smriti bhramshad buddhi nasho buddhi nashat pranashyati
From anger comes confusion, from confusion comes forgetfulness, from forgetfulness the mind loses wisdom, and when wisdom is lost, we fall into trouble.
Bhagwan Krishna’s teachings guide us like a light, helping us make good choices in life. By staying calm, following dharma, trusting our actions, and keeping faith, we can choose wisely and live with happiness, courage, and kindness. Making the right choice is about being true to yourself and caring for others. Every small step matters!
Dear children, from the Bhagavad Gita Shloka 2.48 that you can keep in mind on your journey of choices:
योगस्थः कुरु कर्माणि सङ्गं त्यक्त्वा धनञ्जय।
सिद्ध्यसिद्ध्योः समो भूत्वा समत्वं योग उच्यते॥
Yogasthah kuru karmani sangam tyaktva dhananjaya
Siddhyasiddhyoh samo bhutva samatvam yoga uchyate
Bhagwan Krishna tells Arjuna — Do your duties while staying calm and balanced, without worrying too much about success or failure. This balance of mind is called yoga.
This reminds us to focus on our duties and let go of what we cannot control.
Conclusion
Making the right choices is a journey where we keep learning and growing. With Krishna’s guidance, we can do our duties, be kind, learn new things, and stay calm. Every choice we make affects the world around us, like ripples in water. So let’s choose wisely and share love wherever we go!
