Surdas ke Dohe

Surdas Ji was a 15th–16th-century devotional poet, saint and singer. He is known for his compositions dedicated to Bhagwan Krishna. He was a great devotee of Bhagwan Krishna. His poems are well known and have deep devotional and emotional appeal, his most popular composition is Sur Sagar. Surdas Ji was born in a small village near Mathura, where Bhagwan Krishna spent his childhood. He was blind from birth, but he was blessed with a sharp mind and a heart full of devotion. Even as a young boy, he loved listening to stories about Krishna.

myNachiketa happily presents Surdas ke Dohe for children to follow and learn the timeless wisdom of devotion, love, and kindness through beautiful poetry.

1. Surdas ke Dohe

"प्रभु पूरन पावन सखा, प्राणनहू को नाथ।

परम दयालु कृपालु प्रभु, जीवन जाके हाथ॥"

Prabhu pooran paavan sakha,

praananahu ko naath.

Param dayaalu kripaalu Prabhu,

jeevan jaake haath.

Surdas ke Dohe 1

"God is perfect, pure, and a true friend, the master of all lives. He is supremely kind and merciful, holding everyone's life in his hands."

Meaning:

This Surdas Doha describes the greatness of God, highlighting his pure, kind, and caring nature towards all living beings. He watches over and protects everyone and always showers his blessings on his devotees. He takes care of us at every step, thus guiding us on the right path.

Imagine a small child learning to walk. The child may stumble, but the father holds his hand, ensuring he doesn't fall. Similarly, God is like that father, who always guides and protects us, even when we are unaware of his presence.

2. Surdas ke Dohe

"सुनि परमित पिय प्रेम की,

चातक चितवति पारि।

घन आशा सब दुख सहै,

अंत न याँचै वारि॥"

"Suni purmit priya prem ki,

chaatak chitvati paari.

Ghan aasha sab dukh sahe,

ant na yaanche vaari."

Surdas ke Dohe 2

"On hearing about the boundless love of the beloved, the chaatak bird gazes at the sky with hope. It experiences all hardships, waiting for the clouds, and never asks for ordinary water, even in the end."

Meaning:

This Surdas ka doha praises the chaatak bird (Jacobin cuckoo) to teach us a lesson about true love and patience. The chaatak bird is special because it only drinks pure water that falls from the sky during a certain time. Even if it is very thirsty, it never drinks from ponds or rivers but keeps looking at the sky with hope and faith.

In the same way, a true devotee of God (like Shri Krishna) patiently waits for His love and blessings, even if they face difficulties. Surdas Ji teaches us to be:

  1. Patient: Wait for what truly matters instead of settling for less.

  2. Faithful: Trust that the right thing will come to you if you believe in it.

  3. Dedicated: Focus on what you love without giving up, even when things are hard.

 3. Surdas ke Dohe

"सदा सूँघती आपनो,

जिय को जीवन प्रान।

सो तू बिसर्यो सहज ही,

हरि ईश्वर भगवान्॥"

“Sada sunghti aapno,

jiye ko jeevan praan,

so tu bisaryo sahaj hi,

hari Ishwar bhagwan”

Surdas ke Dohe 3

"We always seek our benefit in everything and easily forget God, the one who has given us this life."

Meaning:

In this Doha, Surdas Ji points out how we often focus only on our desires and material benefits. He reminds us that the true source of our life, our very breath, is God, Hari (another name for Bhagwan Krishna), yet we forget him so easily in our busy lives.

Surdas is requesting us to remember God while doing the daily tasks and always stay connected to him, who has given us this beautiful life.

Children, your parents are the ones who take care of you every day—they give you food, clothes, toys, and lots of love. But what if, one day, you get so busy that you stop talking to them or thanking them? That would be unfair, right?

In the same way, God is like a loving parent. He has given us life, air to breathe, water to drink, and so many wonderful things in the world. But sometimes, we forget about him because we’re too busy thinking about our own needs.

So, children, always remember to thank your parents and God for loving you and caring about you!

 4. Surdas ke Dohe

"दीपक पीर न जानई,

पावक परत पतंग।

तनु तो तिहि ज्वाला जरयो,

चित न भयो रस भंग॥"

"Deepak Peer n jaanai,

paavak parat patang

tanu to tihi jwaala jaryo,

chit na bhayo ras bhang."

Surdas ke Dohe 4

"The lamp is unaware of the pain of the moth as it dives into the flame. Its body burns in that fire, yet its mind remains undisturbed in joy."

Meaning:

In this doha, Surdas Ji describes the unshakable dedication and love of a moth for the light from the flame. The moth willingly dives into the fire of the lamp, unaware of its suffering. Even though its body suffers, its heart remains filled with the joy of reaching the flame.

This is a comparison of true devotion. A devotee, like the moth, is so deeply in love with God that he is ready to sacrifice anything, even himself. The devotee is ready to go through hardships to experience the joy and fulfillment in the presence of Bhagwan.

So, children, you should be fearless, brave, and ready to face difficulties with happiness. You should stay connected to God with love and faith!

 5. Surdas ke Dohe

"जिन जड़ ते चेतन कियो,

रचि गुण तत्व विधान।

चरन चिकुर कर नख दिए,

नयन नासिका कान॥"

"Jin jad te chetan kiyo,

rachi gun tatva vidhaan

charan chikur kar nakh diye,

nayan naasika kaan."

Surdas ke Dohe 5

"God has transformed the lifeless into the living, created the elements of nature, He gave feet, hair, hands, nails, eyes, nose, and ears to the body."

Meaning:

In this doha, Surdas Ji praises God as being the most powerful, who created living beings. God gave us a body, feet to walk, hands to work, eyes to see, ears to hear, and all the other amazing features.

Surdas Ji reminds us of the greatness of God as a creator and inspires us to be thankful for the way God has made us with such perfection.

Children, imagine a potter who takes plain clay and turns it into a beautiful pot. That’s how God created us! He combined the elements of nature and made us a living, breathing, and thinking person. So, we should be thankful, appreciate life, and see God’s greatness.
