Swami Vivekananda once said, ”By the grace of the guru, a disciple becomes a pandit (scholar) even without reading books.”
Hello, to one and all present. Today, I am here to shed light on the significance of Guru Purnima and highlight the importance of a Guru in our lives.
In Sanskrit, the meaning of ‘guru’ is someone who eliminates darkness, and who is not just a teacher but also a guiding light. From imparting knowledge and wisdom to instilling values and morals in their shishyas (students), gurus play an essential role in our development. In India, we dedicate a day to express our gratitude and admiration towards our selfless gurus, known as Guru Purnima.
Guru Purnima is celebrated on the full moon day in the month of Ashadha, which usually comes in June or July. On this day, we remember a great teacher named Maharishi Veda Vyas. He compiled deep knowledge about God, self and the existence of life in texts called Vedas. He is regarded as the author of the Mahabharata and the Puranas.

Guru Purnima is the celebration of the strong bond of trust and respect between teachers and students. It is an opportunity to thank our teachers for selflessly sharing their knowledge and skills with us.
A life without a true Guru or teacher is like walking blindfolded on a bumpy road. Our teachers impart valuable knowledge to us and guide us to face the difficulties of life. Krishna, like a true teacher, helped Arjuna to overcome the most difficult situation of his life and guided him to do the right thing.
Let me tell you a beautiful story. Once, Swami Vivekananda was disturbed due to his financial problems. Shri Ramkrishna Paramhans, his Guru advised him to pray to God to get rid of his problems.
Vivekananda did so and developed a close relationship with God. Experiencing God could not have been so easy for Swami Vivekananda without his great Guru. There are many more examples of guru-shishya relationships that inspire today’s teachers and students.
On this day of Guru Purnima, let us stand united and thank our teachers who have shaped our lives with love and compassion. May their blessings continue to guide us on our journey of growth.
